Computers have majorly improved. I bought a refurbished machine from the local computer repair place, but didn't want to deal with having to move everything over and blah, blah. So I just took out my old hard drives and put them in the new box, and told Windows to boot.

Did it scream at me and tell me that I needed to reinstall? No. Did it even need the installation disk to get drivers? No. Did it need to connect to the internet to go all Windows Update on me? No. It took a few minutes to install drivers for the hardware, and then a quick reboot. Done. It took me less time to drop off my son at school and pick up the computer at the store.

I have never had such an easy time fixing a computer. Huzzah.

Yeah, drivers are almost never an issue these days. You plug stuff in and they just work (unless you're using really old hardware in which case you can usually get them off the internet).

Grandpa went back into hospital for nausea again, but is already back out because it was quick to treat. The dogs think that is awesome.

Also, the people at work have realised I'm not actually cut out for this job so they've let me reduce my hours. Seeing as I'm not paid for it, that doesn't result in my pay being reduced.

So, I forgot my password to a website, and used the forgot my password option. It took a while, but eventually it emailed me my old password. In cleartext.

That is not, in fact, the primary problem.

See, if they can mail me my old password in cleartext, that means they have my old password in cleartext. And also my new password in cleartext. Meaning that anyone who gets access to their database can read my password.

Security on the internet is terrible. I have first hand experience developing for Google. Two months after the project was publicly launched (as in, began working at taking money from customers) I've found out that you can enter into any account through the admin entrance without a password.

I had a scholarship that covered tuition and books and fees. It ran out because I changed my major and would have had to do another year. By then, I was hitting burnout and, well, tried a student loan for a semester.

Five years later, that loan's paid off.

My son has an inner conflict that was summed up nicely by the process of choosing a Halloween costume.

He was going to be Superman - we already have a breastplate and cape (every kid needs a cape). But boys' superhero costumes are terrible things. They're cheap and make no sense ("Muscles on Optimus Prime?! That's ridiculous!"). I couldn't buy the pieces of a Superman costume without either spending a shitload, or just buying the whole damned thing all over again. At that point, why be Superman?

And thus it was that in the Halloween section, he found a totally awesome battleaxe with skeletons on it. It was love at first sight! He had to have that battleaxe! And then... He saw the delicious glitteryness of the girls' fairy wings. Torn between the world of deathly death and sparkly sparkles, what was the solution? Both!

And thus it was that Giovanni became the Death Fairy, the hug-ably ferocious character who steals your money, then kills you. "But don't worry, Mommi. I'm just a pretend Death Fairy. I won't actually do those bad things."

This is stupidly true. You need debt even if only one paid off every month in total otherwise their system treats you as an unknown (which is to say a risk). I had gone through life using a debit card/checks/cash only until like age 21+. No debts, paid everything on time, worked since age 15 through school and my wife had a better credit rating than me while she had outstanding debts.

In some places it works just as well to simply get a mobile phone on a stupid "pay every month" plan, and have that plan put on your credit card. Even if you actually put the money in the account before it's taken out so you never have actual debt. It's regular usage of the account which matters.

So after a while working on other things, I'm back on the library section posters. Currently 20 have Pokémon on them (I could go back and add them to others). And Cthulhu has snuck in, too :D
